I am in receipt of your letter of the 5th instant, from

which I note that the officer administering the Government of Hong-

kong has reported that he does not consider it equitable that Mesars

Arnhold Brothers & Co. should take the assets of Messrs. Arnhold,

Karberg & Co. without the liabilities, and that consequently the Of-

ficer administering the Government of Hongkong recommends that we

should be required to make arrangements to liquidate the pre-war

olaims against the Hongkong Branch of the old firm as a condition pre-

cedent to the assignment to us of the trade marks.

I must admit that this communication comes to me as a con-

siderable surprise, and I cannot but think that the Officer administ-

ering the Government of Hongkong cannot have had all the facts in mind

when making his recommendation.

1) in the first place I venture to remind you, that our request

for permission to make use of the trade marke of the old firm was made

principally in the interests of British Manufacturers who had been ac—

customed to ship under these trade marks and who were constantly prea-

sing us to make every effort to obtain this permission,as they found
